What is brocade fabric?

Brocade is a richly decorative woven fabric. Its pattern is created on the loom itself — usually a jacquard loom — using extra (supplementary) weft threads, so the design is woven into the cloth rather than printed or embroidered on top. This gives brocade its slightly raised, textured motifs.

Many brocades use zari-style metallic threads in gold, silver or copper tones, which is why brocade is a classic choice for Indian festive and wedding wear. Brocades are made with different base yarns, weights and finishes, so the feel and drape can vary a lot from one design to another.
